In 2006 AB Sustain developed the Waitrose WildCare programme, which came into operation in the UK in 2006. Working closely with farmers, and focusing on the protection and enhancement of habitat for wildlife, it soon became clear that a huge positive effect was possible as a result of relatively small changes in farming practices.
With guidance and support from AB Sustain the Waitrose WildCare farmers have demonstrated increases in farmland species known to be in decline nationally. The enthusiasm of participating farmers and the verifiable positive effects on wildlife numbers have resulted in the support of credible wildlife organisations and the receipt of several environmental and wildlife organisation awards for Waitrose WildCare.
All of our habitat management programmes demonstrate it is possible to protect and enhance habitat for wildlife without compromising key business goals (such as health and safety or food safety) or adversely affecting profitability.
